Liberty is Not Freedom
The original study for the Statue of Liberty was based on a design, "Egypt Bringing Light to Asia and had African features and showed the broken chains at her feet and in her left hand. The caption said that this was the way Bartholdi originally designed her, but he was persuaded by the U.S. to change her appearance.

L'étude originale de la Statue de la Liberté s'inspirait d'un dessin intitulé « L'Égypte apportant la lumière à l'Asie » et présentait des traits africains, notamment des chaînes brisées à ses pieds et dans sa main gauche. La légende indiquait que Bartholdi l'avait initialement conçue ainsi, mais que les États-Unis l'avaient persuadé de modifier son apparence.
C'est véritablement un hommage aux esclaves noirs !
