The Queen of Sheba is a Biblical figure. She has met King Solomon an, allegedly, had a son with him. There are many variations in legends surrounding the Queen of Sheba but all of them agree that she originated the Ethiopian Empire. She was known to be a very powerful woman but also very beautiful, with thin Ethiopian features. Consequently, her history and visual representations were quickly transformed and manipulated: she has been represented in paintings and images as a….white queen! Makeda was BLACK. It only reassured Western European populations to view her as a white leader of an Empire.

My painting was done to restore her beauty and glory to their original roots.
